Official opening of the University of Victoria Tax Clinic

No matter how simple your finances are, no one, except maybe accountants, really appreciates tax time. So if you’re not really a “numbers fan”, don’t worry: the new VU Tax Clinic can help.

On Friday April 22, VU’s official guests, senior management, staff and students gathered to mark the opening of the VU Tax Clinic. Ms Fiona Dillon, Chief Tax Adviser at the Australian Tax Office, gave the official address saying, “It is an absolute pleasure to open the VU Tax Clinic. Although we do our best, the tax system can be complicated and the work you will do is extremely important. You are the future of the tax profession.

Based at the Nicholson Street campus, the VU Tax Clinic provides free services to students, staff and the wider community in West Melbourne. From filing your tax, assisting with tax file number requests, registering business name, and verifying the accuracy of payslips, including superannuation amounts and PAYG deductions, VU’s supervised business students are on hand to help.

The National Tax Clinic program began in 2019 and was initially a pilot program rolled out to ten universities. Today, with the support of the government, the program is a success and for the first time this year, a competitive process put 23 universities in competition, with VU one of the 14 successful applications.

VU Vice-Chancellor Professor Adam Shoemaker said the scheme exemplifies how the university is “doing double differently”. “We are constantly working on innovative ways to provide higher education and professional learning for our students,” he said. “Students will have the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in their industry and directly benefit from work-integrated learning opportunities. VU is proud that the VU Tax Clinic serves communities in West Melbourne and offers free or affordable services.
